Silence
I
slowly opened my eyes seeing light right above me, with my head buried in my
soft, feather pillow. I slipped my hand out from under the blanket, into the floating
air, feeling a breeze of cold wind. I slowly lifter my head up and looked
behind me to see what was going on, and found my windows swinging open. The sun
rays flashed into my eyes as I swung my head away. I quickly slipped my blanket
off of myself and sat upright as my bare feet touched the cold hardwood floor.
As I got up I stretched my arms by pulling them behind my head and started
walking toward the bathroom. I swung the bathroom door open still feeling half
asleep. I dragged my feet toward the sink to brush my teeth and comb my hair.
As I lifted my tooth brush up I noticed something strange, a total silence
filled the air as I turned around to see if anyone was there. I shrugged, and
kept brushing my teeth. As the cold water filled in the cracks on my cupped
hands, I threw my hands toward my face, and felt the rush of freezing water
splash against my smooth skin. I threw my right hand toward the towel on the
rack, with my eyes still shut as if they had been glued. I grabbed the moist
towel and rubbed it against my face while lifting my head up to face my mirror.
As I threw the towel back on the silver rack, I starred at myself in the
mirror. Once again, I had heard a complete silent moment, which is unusual for
a house with three kids.
I twisted my head back, to look behind
me, seeing the clock from across the hallway. I stepped out slowly and very
cautiously out of the bathroom, towards the end of the hallway. Suddenly, the
bathroom door slammed right behind me, making me jump as a chill of cold air
rushed through my body. A complete darkness filled the hallway as I sprinted
towards the light switch. I put my hand out in front of my body, feeling the
rough wall trying to find the switch.
The darkness made me feel blind, although I managed to find the switch
in a matter of seconds. I flipped the switch up, and turned around expecting
the light to go back on, but nothing happened. I found the switch again, and
flipped it up and down repetitively, getting nervous about this whole
situation. I walked very slowly toward my parent’s rooms, in black darkness, to
ask them what was going on. Living in the same house all my life, I found their
bed pretty easily, and whispered,
“Mom? Dad? Anyone?” into the blank
atmosphere.
There was no answer, and the silence
continued. When I walked to the kitchen, I felt around on the cold, marble
counter to try and find a flashlight. When I felt a spherical shape, assuming
it was a flashlight, I flicked it on, looking around for anyone. The houses,
the streets, were all empty, no people, no lights, no electricity, no one
there, but me.
